Workshop on ecological and Forest protection factors in deciduous forests

Workshop on ecological and Forest protection factors in deciduous forests

24.2.2015,  09:00 – 17:00

A workshop on pests of trees and their relations to stand composition changes - Department of Forest Protection of the Federal Research and Training Centre for Forests, Natural Hazards and Landscape (BFW)

We will discuss consequences of large-scale changes of conifer stands in non Alpine areas to broadleaved stands. We will focus on ecological aspects, soil relations, likely changes of understory biodiversity, the risk for insect gradations and the possibilities of solutions.

Subjects of the diagnostic work will not only be forest trees and shrubs, but also special cultures as Christmas tree plantations or short rotation forests, which are common in the region.

Bernhard Perny and Gernot Hoch

The workshop is planned for February 24th 2015, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at BFW, Department of Forest Protection, Seckendorff-Gudent-Weg 8, 1131 Vienna, Austria. The number of participants is limited to 10 persons. They should have a basic knowledge on forest protection matters, in practical sense on stereomicroscopic and transmission microscopic work with plant material, insects and fungi.

We will offer a number of presentations by specialists from the departments of Forest Ecology as well as Forest Protection and on the other hand practical demonstrations of pests. The participants will have the opportunity to train diagnoses of tree pests by investigating selected plant material, which is provided by us. In case of interest, we also offer to perform diagnoses with material, which is brought by the participants themselves.
